INTRO TO AFTER EFFECTS

  • Basic understanding on how to link Adobe Photoshop layers into After Effects.
  • Understanding the compositing concept from still images to moving images.

What is After Effects?

Adobe After Effects is a 2.5D animation software used for animation, visual effects, and motion picture compositing. It is used in the post-production phase, and has hundreds of effects that can be used to manipulate imagery. Motion graphics animation works by manipulating vector and rasterized art to create and tell a story. You can integrate physical based media as well through photographs and videography.

Pre-compositing

In Adobe Photoshop
All the layers need to be arrange and rename accordingly so that it will be organize and easy to be animated in After Effects.

In Adobe After Effects
We can import elements such as images, video, vector and more into After Effects. All the layer elements need to be organized and synchronized to the external software platforms such as Photoshop & Illustrator. After Effects files does not embed its media, it links to it.

Idea Development

  1. Write a biography about yourself

    • INTRO
I am a 19 years old student doing my degree at Taylor’s University who recently moved to Malaysia from the Maldives. I would say I am a very creative person who is prone to thinking outside the box more than straightforward. Graphic design has been my passion since I was in the eighth grade so I am very grateful to be in the position I am in.
    • PARAGRAPH 1
I spent the majority of my life in the Maldives, but I did live in Sri Lanka for a few years and I moved cities many times so it does not feel like I have one home. Even so, during my last years in school, I made my first good friends who I hope will last my whole life. We no longer live in the same country, let alone the same city, but we still keep in touch everyday. They are my motivation and my drive.
    • PARAGRAPH 2
Out of all the things there are to draw or create art about, I would say that I am most interested in and feel most comfortable creating art of animals, especially sea animals. To me, they are beautiful, unique creatures; no one looks the same as the other; and there are so many different kinds of just one species. Just sitting down and sketching animals make me feel at peace.
    • SUMMARY
To conclude, I am just an average person who finds inspiration in the ocean and gets through the day with my best friends’ motivations. I just hope I live a peaceful and meaningful life.

  2. Write a statement about your work
    • INTRO
From my work, I wanted to portray some of the many elements of the city, Beijing, that make it such a magical, and historical place. As such, I titled it “Beijing - A Sanctuary”. According to the Merriam-Webster Dictionary, “sanctuary” is defined as a place of refuge and protection and with all the many historical sites Beijing has, it could just be one.
    • PARAGRAPH 1
One of the main elements in my overall design, poster, and animations are the flowers bordering them. At first glance, they may look like cherry blossoms but they are actually, Peach Blossoms. During the spring, especially mid-to-late April, peach blossoms become a major attraction as they bloom and colour the skies and streets with their blush pink hue. These flowers are such a big part of Beijing’s identity that they can also be found at Beihai Park and Beijing Botanical Garden in abundance.
    • PARAGRAPH 2
For the background collage, there were three places that I picked from. The Summer Palace, The Temple of Heaven, and the Forbidden City. All three sites are crucial monuments to Beijing’s history and identity but in the end I chose The Summer Palace. Originating during the Jurchen-led Jin dynasty, its rich history led to its designation as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1998, as such I felt that the palace was a big part of what makes Beijing a sanctuary.
    • SUMMARY
In conclusion, my work is a tribute to the wonderful city of Beijing and so, I included elements, like the Peach Blossom and The Summer Palace,  of the city that I felt really explained why Beijing feels like a sanctuary.
  3. Study and gather all related information about your topic.
