Reflections

Experience:

For me, learning typography has been a big step forward in learning the fundamentals of design. It has taught me that while the creativity and design does matter, it is equally important for the viewer or the reader to get a clear understanding of what I am trying to portray through my work.

This class has helped me uphold standards in my work, the process, and the submission not just for the tasks completed in this class but also for the projects I do in my other classes. Before this, I had the understanding that design and art was only about being free and having fun, but now I understand that in order for designs like posters, logos, articles, and design related to graphic design to work, we need to have some amount of discipline.

It was very refreshing to be given real feedback. The flaws in my work were pointed out, explained, and I was given suggestion on how to better it. I would say that a lot of what I learnt is from making mistakes and getting the proper feedback I received in class.

Observations:

During these past fourteen weeks, I observed that typography is a type of design with a lot of potential. There are so many things that include typography that I did not know or notice before I did this class. For example, the leading, kerning, and tracking in paragraphing. These are all very subtle changes that make or break the overall look of  the design.

On the topic of subtle changes, other than paragraphing, little changes and small additions and/or deletions in the design can give it a whole different look. Editing the design by eye and finding what looks right, even though it is not symmetrical or mathematically equal, can be what completes your design. I had not considered this before, I always thought all the elements of a design have to be symmetrical or equal. Of course, there are also times when symmetry and equal segmenting is necessary.

Findings:

I noticed that when we were restricted to using black, white, and grey in our work, it restricted a lot of the creative ideas I had that were dependent on colour. This had me thinking more out of the box and researching to find more ways that I can portray my message so I ended up widening my knowledge of design. Even though not being able to use colour was frustrating it really helped me broaden the way i see design.

I also found that the concepts and techniques I learn in this class apply for my other classes as well. The practical things like using Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop, I already had a basic understanding of the applications before but I learnt more in this class that helped me in other classes too.
