My final design is a digital collage titled Raajjeyge Raagu. The title is in
Dhivehi, and loosely translates to “Maldives’ Vibes”, although the exact
meaning in Dhivehi is a little more nuanced than that because in this context
the word “Raagu” is hard to translate exactly to English. Since the original
artwork I picked in the beginning was about France, and the area the artist
lived in, I thought to recreate it for the place I am from, the Maldives.
Hence why, the architecture in the centre of the design is a historical
monument called the Hukuru Miskiy, and the elements used are all things the
Maldives is known for, its beautiful ocean, the coconut palm trees, and the
sandy beaches.
There are two main design principles that can be observed
in my design work, balance and movement. The elements in the design have been
placed in such a way that one side/area of the canvas does not feel more
cluttered than the other, creating balance. And I used a gradient with ocean
water texture for the background that will direct the viewer’s focus from the
top of the canvas to the bottom, which is movement in a design.
Final Reflection
In this module the main thing I learned was the design principles that we researched in task 1. I only heard about most of the principles, including the Gestalt theory, from doing this module. Also, I learned that a design work does not necessarily mean that it must be hand drawn, or hand painted from scratch. I was actually very anxious as I don't have much experience with traditional or digital art but later found that as long as you create it and it conveys a message it is considered a design/art work.
I most enjoyed getting to look through other people's artworks when I was looking for one artwork in task 1. At first I did not know where to look at to find a suitable artwork for the task and was searching through Pinterest. Even on that platform, there are so many creative artists with their own art styles and perspectives. And then I asked the lecturer where I could find a suitable artwork for the task to then which he directed me to the MET Collection. They had more traditional work, older work, but even though they were different from digital art it was all still unique and amazing in their own way.
I least enjoyed actually making the final design, mostly due to the fact I doubted my skills but also because it was my first idea to make a digital collage. Then I started having issues with my laptop and at this point I did not have any other computers or laptops available so I thought to draw out my idea on my iPad. I spent a little over an hour working on that and it just was not going the way I wanted. I ended up downloading Adobe Photoshop on my iPad and learning how to use the application on my iPad while making the collage. I wish I could have blurred the edges of the waves better but I could not figure out how to do it on the iPad.
I don't know if I really learned anything about myself during this module. During this semester I learned that I tend to procrastinate things that I believe would take a lot of effort and skill that I think I do not possess and when I rush to finish it in the end I find that it didn't even take a fraction of the time I thought it would. This has presented itself heavily in my work for this module.
Referencing back to procrastinating, I think one thing that might change is me leaving things to do until the very end and stressing myself out about missed deadlines and unfinished work. I also think my approach to design will keep changing and improving as these things do. Something I don't think will change is focusing my art on nature, beaches, the ocean, etc... because those are things I'm familiar with, and things that I'm frequently around. I've noticed this pattern from when I was young, anything I create or draw is always related to nature, whether it be flowers and plants or animals.
I aspire to learn and get better at drawing and creating art. I know art presents itself in many forms but I have always wanted to be better at drawing by hand. I have only recently acquired an iPad and Apple Pencil to go with it so I want to practice and get better at it. Many times I find myself coming up with ideas of things I could draw but not being able to, so I want to be able to create all those designs the best way that I can.
